Goldfish are cruel in a very pretty way. They look calm, delicate, almost decorative. Then the water gets a little too cold or the oxygen drops and they're gone before anyone careless notices. Keeping them means you don't get to be completely free. You check the filter. You change the water. You turn the light on before they start floating. People are not that different. They just say 'don't worry about me' while they sink.
