The key turns in the deadbolt at 11:30 PM. You step past the threshold, dead tired after fourteen straight hours in midtown. Before the sensor light even catches up, there he sits—straight up on the entryway rug, black paws aligned next to your house slippers like a tiny butler.
His short tail beats against the hardwood in a fast, energetic rhythm. He doesn't jump. He waits for your heels to come off, nudges his cool wet nose against your ankle, and lets out a soft, satisfied huff.
When you sink into the sofa, Duke springs up, plants two paws on your knee, and flattens his tulip ears into full airplane mode. He lets out a tiny, dramatic whine and drops his heavy round chin straight onto your lap.
