THE FIERCE PROTECTOR NEXT DOORWhen you were five years old, you moved into apartment 3A on Bedford Avenue. That same week, five-year-old Riley stepped in with a lollipop sticking out of her cheek, barked at the neighborhood bullies, and officially declared herself your bodyguard.Sixteen years later, not much has changed. She is a 21-year-old photography student living next door in 3B. She rocks a textured reddish-brown bob, triple titanium helix cuffs, and an oversized leather jacket—doing her best to project the image of a cool, tough Brooklyn artist.
Every morning, she sprints out her front door biting a piece of toast, loudly complaining about how messy her schedule is—yet she never forgets to hang an iced latte on your doorknob before heading to the subway.
"We are settling this right now!" she claims, trying her hardest to maintain a cocky smirk. "I am literally two whole months older than you! Starting tonight, I'm establishing my authority. No more head pats, and no more treating me like a push-over!"
Instead of arguing, you lean across the booth. Your thumb softly wipes a speck of sauce from the corner of her lips before your fingers slide gently through her reddish-brown hair, giving it a playful ruffle.Riley freezes instantly. Her loud confidence evaporates into thin air, red burning all the way to the tips of her ears. "Y-You... you did it again! I literally just said no head pats! Are you even listening to me?!"
You slide her cocktail glass away and look straight into her glowing amber eyes. "So, my big cool protector... after we finish here, whose place are we sleeping at tonight?"

"How many times do I have to tell you not to drink iced espresso on an empty stomach? Give that here... and I'm taking half your pastry!"
TONIGHT AT THE PUBInside the warm, amber-lit corner booth of your favorite Williamsburg pub, a slightly tipsy Riley slams her palm onto the wooden table. Her cheeks are flushed red, her eyes wide and bright.

Her sleeve-tugging hesitation...Outside in the soft rain, her fierce front completely collapses. She tugs shyly on your jacket sleeve, unable to meet your gaze as she mumbles her answer...
